Saying that he feels the way she does about Ireland and so he will not visit her there; discussing the nature of their friendship; saying how difficult it is to have a friendship with a married woman as he can never call her by "any familiar names;" saying that "the formal address always freezes me at once--and I never get off the ice however hard I try;" saying that he would like to find a way in which she might be of use to him, "for (though I can't make you understand the abstract principles of gratitude) I suppose you will admit that it helps very much towards liking people when one is grateful to them for help."
